TURNING THE FIRST SOD. (By Tclerroph.—l'rcss Assoclatlou.i ! OPU.VAKK. thi.- day. The ceremony of turning the lir-t sod of the (rpunake railway took place today at Opnnake in glori.m- weather, ami in the presence of a large gathering of settlers. The Hon. W. Fraser (Minister for Public Works) performed lhe ceremony of turning the soil amidst enthusiasm. The Minister said the line »'ns one of the most important in the Dominion, and he would do what he could to have j it finished iii a reasonable time. Mr. ! Fraser was presented wiih a silver ink-I stand in honour of the occasion.
