It is reported that several important changes in connection with the general staff of the Defence Department arc likely to take pla.-e shortly. As has already been officially announced, Colonel E. S. Heard, chief of the genera' staff, will return to England in J >»?. and it is stated that Colonel E.«• C. Chaytor. officer commanding the Wellington" military district, with headquarters at Palmcrs-on North, is to be pro- _ moted to the Dominion headquarters, at Wellington. What office he b W fill has not been mentioned. It is also stated that Colonev Chaytor is to besneceeded at Palmerston North by Major Johnstone, an Imperial officer, who is ai present in New Zealand on furlong* from India. Colonel V. .. Smyth, officer •immanding the Canterbury military district, will be leaving fOT England shortly on six months' leave of absent* and while, he is away his duties will •be carried <>n by Colonel K. A.
