RACING NEWS.

AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB'S AXrrXJMN MEETING. rNTEHESTMTG DAY'S SPORT. A7BANA WINS BIG EVENT. The Auckland Trotting Clubs Autumn Meeting opened at Alexandra Park yesterday afternoon, in beautiful autumn weather, and with a large attendance. The track wa s greatly benefited oy the overnight rain, asd was in splendid order, the racing being decidedly interesting. The bi~ erent, won by Airana, in particular was a pretty one to watch, and the field were in close company practically all the way. The management of the meeting was entirely satisfactory, the various officials, under the secretary (Mr. C. F. Mark), getthrouph their respective duties in a rummer that left no room for complaint. THE TOTALISATOR. Speculation during the afternoon was brisk, the staff of Messrs. W. Blomfleld and Co. handling the sum of £10,863 10/. as compared with £5,047 lry on the corresponding day last year. Particulars are: THE OPENING EVENT. In the opening event there was only one withdrawal. Proud Child, Jan., which left twenty to go to the post, and they were a good average lot of maidens. When the machine closed, Tapatlna was a good first favourite, hut a lot of money went on Virago, while Lady Meldon, Black Thorn, and Salvle Dash had friends. The favourite was early in trouble, and never looked like getting to the front, but Virago, taking charge with half the distance covered, really made a o-ne-horee race of It, winning easily, with Lady Meldon and the favourite in the places. THE) FAVOURITE WINS. Another good field went to the post in the Siangere Handicap, the withflrawal being Uniform, Moorish Chief, Ilauruia, and Hosie Grey, leaving a field of seventeen to line up at the clock. Punters tacked Fashlonwood down to odds on, the southerner carrying about twice as much as Sweetmeat, the next best backed, the only other to get anything like decent support being Lady Zeppelin. The event caused some little sensation, Lady Rosier toppling over while turning round to come to the post, and some delay was caused. Further delay was occasioned by Sweetmeat, a two-year-old, starting bucking when the bell rang to go, and interfering badly with the field, which were then called back. Sweetmeat caused further obstruction, when they eventually did leave, the favourite, which wag on the back mark, having some trouble to get clear. lady Zeppeim showed a lot of pace in the early stages, but IaJJ-a-mile from home Fashionwood had the race In safe-keeping, and eventually won easily, Lady Zeppelin losing second position by breaking badly In the straight.

A GOOD RACE. The Alexandra Handicap, the principal event of tie day, bronght oat half-a-dozen. Eccentric being the eleventh-hour withdrawal. Gold Ben was made a very solid proposition, although there was plenty of money for Ludßki. the pair carrying more than half the Investments. Ludski sot ont well, but broke badly after covering a conple of furlongs, leaving Wallace M., the outsider of the field to go on In front. Wallace M. acted as pacemaker till they went past the half-mile post the last time, when Clive looked all over a winner, but broke badly, and Alrana then went to the front, and eventoally won a good race by three lengths, with Wallace M. and Gold Bell In the places, and Cllve, which broke a second time, close np fourth. A WELLrRIDDBN RACE. All the acceptors came out for the Banter Handicap, and Craibwood was made favourite, with Kitty's Tux, Cavalier, and Lieutenant all carrying plenty of money. Kitty's Tox started 6lowly, but soon ran to the front, and pasaed the stand the last time it looked all over. The favourite, however, on which Julian rode a patient race, pot within striking distance as they went along the back, and, catching Kitty's Tux.at the distance, outstayed her in the run home, and scored a popular victory. The ancient Cavalier was third. AX EASY WES. Recommended dropping out of the Hobson Handicap left thirteen to be harnessed up. St. Crania was rushed by punters, and started a good favourite, carrying more than twice as much as War Oloud, the next best backed, while half-hearted support was accorded Miss Dolce, Selkirk, Wallace M., and SundlaL Th» race proved to be the good thing the betting made out, for the favourite, getting in the lead early, practically made a one-horse race of it, winning easily from Wallace M., which gained second honours after a good race over the last half mile with Miss Dulee. A GOOD DIVIDEND. Vanolare, Craibwood, and Lady Doctor failed to make their appearance for the Stewards , Trot, and of the ten left Grattan Abbey was made a better favourite than Robex, nothing else getting anything moru than ordinary support. The favourite did not Wok like a winner at any part, and, although Itobex was running second for the greater part of the journey, he tired to nothing over the last few furlongs, and it was left to the veteran Baxter to lead all the way, and last long enough to win by a length from Airana. The latter put np a great performance, and was timed to do a little worse t3i«n 3.27, which beats the New Zealand Trotting record for that distance, but, of course, as a win was not registered, it cannot count. Baxter paid a good twofigure dividend. THE FAVOURITE BEATEN. The Cornwall Handicap, from which Prince Rnfus, Golden Rose, and Scotia were withdrawn, was a good betting race. Eccentric winding up favourite, with Uniform. Master Park, Walnut, and Casling all well backed. Casling and Uniform were the leaders for three-parts of the journey, when Uniform took command, and was never afterwards troubled, winning at the flnleh by a couple of lengths. Walnut stopped on the mark, and his backers did not get a rnn for their money. THE FINAL EVENT. The final event bronght out a field of twelve. War Cloud, St. Ursula, Recommended, and Mountain King being the absentees. Cndine was deemed worthy of most support, but Lord Victor. Miss] Dulce. Manecenita, and Ben F. all had friends. The latter went out to win from : end to end, and at the home turn looked like seeing >t out. He Just failed, however, to stall off a late , run by Undine, and suffered defeat by lralf-a-length.
