The valley of Chamonix has been overwhelmed by avalanches, the snow reaching as high as the third floors of the houses. The lakes on the road to Geneva have been filled up. An avalanche in one hamlet followed the course of the street whole trees being brought from the hillside and deposited there. Tbe landslide at Brives extends a square mile, and the mountain side is stiH moving.
