THE SYDNEY-AUCKLAND SERVICE.

The decision of the Huddart-Parkcr Company to make Auckland the terminal port for the Rhrerina in the Sydney-New Zealand service, in a manner similar to that adopted with the Maheno, 13 a tardy recognition of the entire unsuitability of the Victoria to be continued in the trans-Tasman Sea running. We have no doubt that, pending the further improvement that thie service justifies, and that we anticipate will be early forced upon the companies concerned, this vessel will be continued in the trade between Auckland and Sydney. Aβ regards the promises of Sir James Mills towards the end of last year that the Maheno would be taken off for an overhaul long overdue, and that one of their best boats would take her place, it is now stated that the Maheno will be withdrawn in April. Sir James Milts indicated a possibility of the Maunganui being placed in the service, and we truet that the semi-promise of the then managing director will be redeemed. It has been stated, though not authoritatively, that the Manuka will take up the Maheno's running. This would not be satisfactory. In the event of the Maunganui not .being available, we would suggest that the Wdllochra's place be taken by the Manuka, and that vessel be placed in the Sydney-Auckland running. At present the Willochra is scheduled to make a trip in the San Francisco trade in May—the off season —but such an arrangement is capable of revision. New Zealanders who have travelled more recently on the Australian coast have had it very plainly brought home to them that the Union Company have not advanced their intercolonial standard in keeping with the Common wealth companies. There is a feeling that New Zealand has been milked to eomp extent to build up trans-Pacific mail services, and it is time that the company gave some tangible evidence that they are etill capable of adequately catering for such an important and lucrative trade ac this Sydney-Auckland -connection has developed into. ■ ■ ■
