A VIOLENT SHOOK. MOST SEVERE FOR NINE YEARS. ALARM IN WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph-—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sunday. A very heavy earthquake—the most severe since that of 1904—occurred at 11.35 ajn. to-day. The tremors lasted for fully five seconds, one being particularly violent. The post office dock chimed, and stopped, and many other penffulum and electric clocks in various parts of the city stopped. In some ibusinesp premises windows were damaged. The shock occurred during church eerrices, and in several instances members of the congregation* were so alarmed that they left their seats and made their way into the open air. The shock—which is the strongest felt here for a long time—lasted for several seconds, and caused houses to rock at a great rate. In some instances crockery was thrown from shelves, and considerable alarm was experienced in some househoMe. It was come minutes after the quake before doors ceased swinging. Alarm was caused in the churches, and several people ran out of their houses. No damage is reported. SHOCK AT FAXMEKSTON. PAL.MERSTON NORTH, Sunday. A severe shock of earthquake was felt here at 11.30 a.m. to-day. With the exception of knocking some bottles off the shelves in a chemist's shop no damage is reported locally. Several people in the churches rushed for the doors.
