The new week at -Himtly marked ihe beginning of another stage an the development© tihat will lead to a restoration of normal working conditions in and about tlhe mines. Wort 'was already in full ewing at the Extended mine, but this morning a start urafi made in RalpJh'e mine. The number of .men who descended -was 53, comprising miners, trackers, and shiftmen, while in addition to these there were 20S men at work below in the Extended' mine. Even allowing for .tlhe engineers, winders, mechanics, and surface lhande generally, there is still only about ihaif the full complement of the mines at work, and the output of coal is correspondinMv small. c J Large minubers of mine re, wiho were mem:bers of the old Miners' Union-, have left, or are makirngprepamtions to leave, the township. Some of them have been j-efused admieeion to the new union, but many have preferred to eeek employment eteewthere iha-ther *han accept the condition under which ienrploynien.t fe noiw offered. Signs of shifting are seen all day long, vehicles loaded with furniture passing to and fro. (Many newcomers huv-e vieited- the township in the hope, presumably, of obtaining work, bat not all of them are being accepted by the union as euitaiWe employees for tihe mince.
