THE EXHIBITION.

SUCCESSFUL SUMMER FAIR. CROWDS DAY AND NIGHT. It -would be interesting to know the number of Exhibition visitors now in Auckland, if the means were available. They are certainly numerous, for southerners and people from other parts of the Auckland Province are continually met with in large numbers in divers parts of the city. Most of them doubtless have come either directly or indirectly in connection with the Exhibition, and .to their presence is probably due the consistently satisfactory attendance which is found at the summer fair, even at times when Auckland is "at work." Another indication of liberal support from the South have been the crowded trains which have been corning to ami fro -during the Exhibition season. The protracted summer carnival proceeds merrily on its course, aided by the Boyal Artillery Band, the fairy fountain, the aquarium, the art gallery, the amusements in Wonderland Park, the ontlocik tower and marry attractions apart from the actual substance of the Exhibition. A return of the attendances from the date of "opening (December 1) to Friday last, shows that 6462 people, apart from attendants have passed through the turnstiles each day. Of these 4,746 were adults and 293 children paying at the gates, while 1,123 were holders of season tickets. This calculation did not, of course take into account the large numbers of holders of attendants' passes who proceed, to the Exhibition each day. TTTFI WOOLWICH BAND. A shaded spot in the vicinity of the "Mennie" bandstand is a place of delight to music lovers on -these warm afternoons. This fact is always fully appreciated by a large proportion of day visitors, and the two hours' session of the Royal Artillery Band seems to pass all too. quickly. Yesterday_afternoon several selections from "The Sunshine GirF* iwere played, this being the beginning of an. innovation which is to figure in most of the programmes. Some magnificent numbers of a higher class were also given. On the evenings the attendances around the No. 1 bandstand (the band plays on alternate rotundas) are naturally larger. Last night a varied programme included operatic selections from "A Waltz Dream." An item much appreciated this afternoon was the grand selection from '"Carmen." Wednesday evening's orchestral concert by the band in the open air is being looked forward to with general interest. TORCH-LIGHT TATTOO. An attraction on a big scale will be the military tattoo, combining torchlight, territorial, naval and musical effects. A display of cutlass drill by a party of bluejackets from H.M-S. Pyramus, is being rehearsed, and this in Auckland should be a novel sight. Ati interesting item will be the "Reminiscences of All Nations." This is descriptive of a tour round the world, giving the characteristic music of various countries. For this itejn the military band of the Royal Artillery and of the 3rd Mounted Rifles will be combined, thus forming the largest military combination ever heard in the Dominion;" and comprising over eighty instrumentalists. Lieut. Whalley Stewart will conduct the performance, and the solos will be played by members of the Mounted Rifles Band.
