BURSTING CF A BAM. [ HUGE WAVE OF WATER. NEW YORK, January 17. Reports from Cumberland. In Maryland, state that tbe Potomac River has overflowed its banks. A large area is inundated, and hundreds are homeless. The trouble was caused owing to the West Virginia Pulp Paper Company's dam breaking. A wall of water swept down the -.alley, carrying oil houses bodily. Warnings were telephoned along the line of Hood, and saved hundreds of lives. Several persons are supposed to have been drowned. The huge wave travelled 20 miles before rejoining the Potomac River below the town of Sehnell. It increased the height of the river by sft. The authorities blew up several bridges to prevent the wreckage from collecting aud causing the flooding o f *he surrounding country.
