GRAMMAR SCHOOL SUCCESSES

The results of the University Entrance ScboraJßhip- ■eTarnrnationa are now to hand,,turd ..they-reflect- the- greatest possible credifrupon the .Auckland Grammar School. It mnst 'be remEmbered that the contest for Junior University Sc2itrfarslri|»aDd. Senior XationaLSdrolarships produces very keen competition between the a blest pupils in our secondary schools; and the standard is so high that in many subjects it falls little below the level of the B.A. Degree. Under these oorrditions, to win a large number of scholarships.- in- any one year is a very notable -fe&t, and this year -<£he Aucldand~. Grammar School has created a rrecorrLof-whicb it.may -weSl be proud. The published list shows that thirty Junior University, • and Senior National scholarships <hare been awarded. Of these the Auckland Grammar School has secured no less than twelve. No other secondary 6chool in the Dominion lias gained more than a.quarter of this number, Auckland's nearest competitors being Otago Boys' High School and Christ's College" (Christchurch), with three scholarships each. We do not regard the gaining- of scholarships as the sole end and aim of a school's existence; but we certainlythinkr that this splendid record of successes- 'is highly creditable to our Grammar School, its principal, and hie staff. IWe may note also that one of the Auckland Grammar School candidates heads the list of junior scholars with a vary substantia'! majority of marks, and this forms a fitting climax to the achievements of our Grammar School in one of the most exacting and exhaustive educational tests that the New Zealand University prescribes.
