HANDS ACROSS THE SEA."
INTEHCHAIfGE OF TEACHERS. SUGGESTION TO DEPARTMENT. A suggestion that the Department of Education .-hould arrange for an interchange of teachers of New Zealand with those of other parts of the Kmpire was dis.-uss.ed by the New Zealand Kdlic.itional lnstitme yesterday. A letter containing the proposal was read froTU the Auckland Institute, and a remit bearing on the. subject was tabled by the Hawke" Bay delegates. Mr F. J. Rowley said that while the suggestion did not appeal to him personally, he fell that if there were a sufficient mrmbor of'younfr teachers willing to contribute part of the cost, the Department shoud provide the facilities for such inte.rcJnngcs. They could only lead to good results for the Kmpire. a= a whole. Mr 11. A. Dnrrnw (Anckland) remarked that, the local institute had taken up the "Hands across the sea , ' idea, and be believed that if the propo sal before them wa* given effect to they would in a few years- time see parties of teachers setting out from New Zeaand to secure the benefit of experience from abroad. The principle contained in the remit was affirmed, and this further resolution was carried on the motion -of Mr T. V. Warren, B.A.:— "That this institute %-ndorses and urges upon the Department the proposals laid down in the letter of the Auckland Institute m-aring on the "taads across the sea" movement.
