Gray will have the mount on Good Night 1n the Great Northern Foal Stakes. He will also ride Statdancer in the Christmas Handicap. A larger number of Auckland horses than usual will be competing this year at the Thames Jockey Club's Summer Meeting, which promises to be a record gathering.

H-istxM-iefcte was expected to amrive from Wellington yesterday, but did not put in an appearance, and Is now expected this afternoon.

A. Pringlc is expected to put In an appearance this afternoon with his team for the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting.

In the South owners are experiencing considerable difficulty in getting riders for the Christmas Meetings, all the more prominent horsemen being engaged at Ellerslie.

M. Edwards has arrived at Epsom with Denver Huon, Mahomet. Lady Edna, and Kirwee, all of which claim engagements at the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting.

The Castor-Cissy horse Urauus achieved a novel distinction at a recent meeting In Tasmania, where two of his stock ran a dead heat in a five-furling race. This is most unique, and probably has never previously occurred In the history of racing.

B. Decley has been engaged to ride Soltano in the A.RC. Railway Handicap. Some donbt is expressed as to whether the son of Soult will fulfil his engagement in the big sprint or not. In conversation with his trainer F. Davis this morning he informed mc that it would all depend on the state of the going. If everything was favourable he would be a runner, but if the ground wasi bad he would be withdrawn in favour of Beldame.

The ■Merriwee mare Wee Olga has been showing decided symptoms of soreness after she works at Kllerslic of a morning. She throws it off somewhat after beiug rubbed down, but may not be a runner at the A.R.C. Summer Meeting. This will be bad lurk for her owner, for Wee Olga had been moving exceptionally well ou the tracks, and the prospects of -her picking up a stake at the forthcoming carnival were decidedly bright.

The performance of Denver Huon in the Mace Memorial Handicap ou Saturday was, says a Southern writer, one of the best ever witnessed on the New Brighton course. He caused Ms driver some trouble at the start, and lost fully four seconds. When he settled down, however, he gave a fine exhibition of speed, and though he still had a big gap to bridge over the last half-mile, he stuck to his task well, only failing by a neck at the linish. He was timed to do the full journey In 4m 355, ami he firmly established his right to !>e regarded as one of the greatest horses ev«r seen on a New Zealand trotting track. Since his arrival from Australia he has run several good races, but so far he has uot succeeded in scoring a win.

With the near approach of the Auckland Cup, added to the eitra attraction of the Auckland Exhibition, a larger army of crooks than usual can be confidently expected to foregather in the Queen City. The tactics of these gentlemen have not changed much, and the rich uncle from Fiji, with the large plantation, and other snch tricks is still largely In evidence. One new suncme has, however, been unearthed. About 3 o'clock In the afternoon the crook presents at a bank a cheque, purporting to be from a person in West Australia, or some such other place. Of course it is not honoured until the bank receives word that it is genuine, but a receipt is handed to the swindler for the amount, say £2,000, and on paper he Is worth that sum on the authority of the bank. On the strength of the receipt he visits jewellers and other keepers of small but expensive trifles and purchases valuables to a -big amount, providing that the business people are trusting enough to accept your cheque to be paid out of the £2,000 supposed to be in your credit. Then he disappears to parts unknown and -realises on his haul and reflects upon tbe optimism of human nature, and dodges the police until the affair has blown over.

According to a Southern writer, the action of the New Brighton Trotting Club In arranging a match over a mile between the Australasian champion Emmeline and the American mare Lovelock, created a lot of Interest In the club's meeting on Saturday. Lovelock, who has a record of 2m s»s In America, -was making her first public appearance in New Zealand, and many people looked forward to her meeting with Emmeline to provide a good line regarding the relative merits of American and colonial performers. Unfortunately Lovelock is not at her best yet, and it may be some time before she becomes thoroughly acclhnatlscd and in condition to race up to her reputation. She has, however, a fine style, the favourable impression being enhanced by the fact that she paces without hopples. tHer time for the mile on Saturday was 2m IS 2-ss. Emmeline "aye a nice exhibition, doing the first half-mfle In lm 7 3-5s and the mile in 2m 17s without being pressed at any stage. Both mares were cheered as they went out, while an enthusiastic crowd accorded them a wild ovation when they returned to the paddock. It was quite a sporting event, the purse offered being small, while the tut&Hsator was not open.

C. Brown has been engaged to ride Gold«ize in the A.R.C. Railway Handicap.

Tte Railway HamHcap candidate Postillion, ■which made !his first abearance at Ellerslie this morning, looks exceptionally

-web, and his Tesolnte style of going in the Tight task apportioned- Mm gained! Mm a lot of CriendS.

It is rumoured that The Tetrarch, the sensational English two-year-old, has become Infirm, and that a. veterinary surgeon has been called in to examine the horse. .Racegoers are apprehensive, as The Tetrarch has already been backed at a particularly short price for next year's Derby. THE AUCKLAND CUT. The final acceptance for the Auckland Cnp leaves eighteen still in the richest race in New Zealand, the -withdrawals at last night's payment tieuig Los .angetae and St. Francis. Potoa is now at the head of affairs, and nothing is doing better at headquarters than the 6on of Monoform, and he is fully entitled to his position fn the quotations as one of the favourites. He has to be taken on trust over a distance of ground, but evidently his owner has no doubts on this score, or he would hardly have paid up for him. Bon Ton, about the starting of which some diubts -were expressed, has arrived ou the scene and looks well. Both Bleriot and Jack Delaval are doing as well as their best friends could -wish. Ija Keina was reported to be under a cloud, but from what can be gathered there is nothing more serious than a slight prick ou one of her feet, and ehc worked at Ellerslie this morning. Colonel ,Sonlt is doing as well as any of the local horses, and Is in good favour in the double speculation. Next week may throw further light on the prospects of the various candidates, but at present the race bears a very open appearance. THE BAILWAT HANDICAP. In the Railway Handicap the defections are Potoa, Wai-step. Waiarewa, Winning Way, Bluestone, Field Force, Tinopal, and Banksla, nineteen still being in the list. Soltano is now at tile head l of the handicap, but his trainer makes no secret of the fact that unless the conditions are favourable he will not start. A lot of fast ones are engaged, and the winner is exceptiona-lly well concealed. AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. The acceptances received for the first day's racing of the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting are considerably above expectations, and the club should be rewarded with a record gathering. A pleasing feature of tbe acceptances Is the number of visiting horses engaged, and the racing should- be the best yet witnessed at Epsom. In the Trotting Cup twelve are engaged, including the Australian crack Denver Huon, which, it is understood, will endeavour to put up fresh records, purses for which are offered by the club. EIXERSIXE TBATNIHG NOTES. A BIG MORNING'S WORK. ON A HEAVY GROUND.

The rain that, fell during the night had trainers somewhat anxious as to whether the course proper would bo open this morning or not, but the caretaker (Mr. A. -IU1I) recognising, the importance of £lv-. ins the trainers every opportunity to send their horses fast work removed the barriers, and all the work before breakfast was registered on the course proper outSide the trestles. The track, although a trifle holding, provided splendtd going, and a lot of useful work was witnessed.
