POLICE COURT.
(Before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M.I PBTTKKENIfESS. 'Here, I haven't been drunk for over five years; never tasted a drink," protested John Patrick Donovan, whet a constable stated that he arrested the man very drunk in Queen Street yesterday afternoon and bailed later. Ihe protest was, however, made in such a manner as to cause the Magistrate to remark: "You sound as if you were pretty drunk now," and on this personal" corroboration ot the constables word, his Worship fined the man 10/. Four'first offenders were fined £o, and another was convicted and discharged. Thomas Gartland was lined 10/. A -DISORDERLY HOUSE. Mabel Constance Wilkinson (39) admitted that she was the occupier of a house of ill-repute in Alexandra Street, and a charge that she was an idle and disorderly person was withdrawn; Sarah May Thompson (27), a half-caste Maori, denied that she was idle aud disorderly, and assisted in the management of the house in question; and Archibald Neville (30), who was found in the house and resisted arrest, was charged with assaulting Constable .Tames and damaging his uniform. Wilkinson was convicted and made the subject of a prohibition order, and in addition ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, the accused in the meantime to return to her home in Dunedin. Thompson promised to go back to her people at Mercer. She was convicted on the charge of having insufficient lawful means of support, and was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Neville was convicted on the assault charge, and sentenced to a month's imprisonment. THE FIGHTING HABIT. Two able-bodied men, Michael McEvoy (aged 38) and James Pelley (51), came to grips in a rough and tumble near the Union Company's office in Queen Street yesterday afternoon, and attracted the usual crowd of spectators as well as a constable. They were promptly arrested, and facing the Court this morning were told that they both appeared to be addicted to the habit of getting into trouble. McEvoy had been the subject of three convictions in three months, but Pelley had kept away from police interposition for twelve months. Inspector McGrath stated that blows were exchanged, but it was not possible to say which of the pair was the aggressor. Both were fined £2, and given time in which to pay. DOSSING OUT. William Cook (46), who said he was ■working on the -wharf, denied that he was a rogue and vagabond, but admitted that he was unlawfully on the stables of P. Foley last night. The police stated that the accused was found asleep on the premises, but as he was described as a stableman it was naturai -that he should return to his accustomed environment. A conviction was entered, and Cook discharged with the advice not to go promiscuously dossing out in the future. TMTTsrrKT.T. a Tanmrrs. Robert Irwin Heachleam, aged 20, charged with obtaining the sum of £2 11/6 from Jenkins and Mclntyre at Hamilton, by means of a valueless cheque, was remanded to appear at Hamilton on the 23rd inst. A further remand till the 27th inst. was made in the charge against William ivlcCloud, the Wild West showman, charged with discharging a pea-rifle a± an attendant on the show grounds on the 11th inst. At a meeting of the Waikato Motor Launch Clnb at Hamilton last night several members reported that launches had been tampered with by small boys. It was decided to ask the schoolmasters to warn pupils. A club run for the Christmas holidays was arranged. The pupils of the Hamilton East School presented Misses Graham and Barton and Mr. Bell with tokens of esteem yesterday. The pupils of Miss Newell's private school made a similar presentation.
