SOME STRINGENT RULES. BLOCK "FEDERATION OF LABOUR.I I SECRET BALLOT OBLIGATORY. I The rules which hava been accepted with the registration of the new union at Huntly, the "Taupiri Coal Mine Workers' Union," contain . the following provisions regarding membership and relation to the Arbitration Act:— j "The union shall consist of an unlimited number of workers of any occupation employed in or about tl_ Taupiri Coal Mine, excepting engineers, enginedrivers, firemen, and winchmen. Any such worker (other than those excepted), who shall satisfy the union or its committee of management that he is not in any way connected with, or subject to the control of the Federation of Labour or any similar organisation opposed to registration of industrial unions under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. 190S, and its amendments, shall be eligible for membership, and by joining the union shall be deemed to have agreed to abide by the rules of the union. Every member, within 48 hours of receiving written notice, or within 72 hours after notice has been posted to him at his last known address, requiring him to satisfy the committee of management that he is not connected with, or subject to the control of, the Federation of Labour or any simi-1 lar organisation aforesaid, shall satisfy the committee accordingly; otherwise be shall, on the expiration ot" the said period, cease to be a member of the union, but shall remain liable for all fees and moneys due to the union up to that time." i
"(a) The union may affiliate or feder-! ate with organisations registered under 1 the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitra-1 tion Act, or any Act passed in substitu-' tion therefor, but in no case with organi- : sations not registered; (b) subject to the provisions of sub-clause (c) of this rule, no member shall join or belong to any other labour organisation, nor to any other union, unless and until this union, has affiliated or federated with the afore- '■ said organisation or union, and any member who disregards this rule shall be ! expelled from the union by the executive; (c) no member of any other union shall be allowed to join this union unless and until he satisfies the executive (hat he has given notice in writing to such other j union discontinuing his membership of that union. This rule shall not be re- j pealed or amended unless a secret ballot has been taken of all financial members of the union, and the consent obtained of the whole of such financial members." i "Subject to the provisions of the In-1 dustrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act and its amendments on all matters referring to (a) the disposal of the union's funds or (b) cancellation of registration, it shall be obligatory to the union to take a secret ballot of all financial members. Nor shall any motion in favour of the cancellation of the registration of the union he deemed to be carried unless four-fifths of the financial members of the union record their votes in favour of such resolution. five may determine, and shall be executed on behalf of the union under its common seal by the president and secretary, or, in tiie absence ni them, by any two officers the executive may appoint for that purpose. Should any member of the union be dismissed from his employment for taking a leading part in any matter connected with the union, the members are pledged to. stand by him, provided that the executive approve of the action which.' be had taken. The executive may grant compen»ation to such member for loss of time through his action. "The imion'shall not be dissolved unless and until a secret ballot has been taken of all financial members of the union, and the consent obtained of at least four-fifths of such financial members."
