Eight years ago Britain laid the keel-plate of her first modern all-big-gun battleship and gave her the proud name of "Dreadnought." At the same time Jie started a race in naval armaments greater than the world had ever known before. In that year this country was the only Power constructing tbJ3 new typ> of fighting ship, but to-day the large nations are building in half-dozens and dozens, and even the comparatively poor and feeble little States have caught the infectious disease, and arc ordering their "Dreadnoughts." From the £1,750.000 that Britain, as the only Power building, was spending in 1005, at this year's end there will bo approximately 1.10 ships of the big-gun type built or building, and the various naval Powers of the world will have spent—during a period of eight years—in this class of vessel alone something like £370.000.000. Equally as noteworthy as the increase in numbers is the advance in fighting power and battle value. To-day our latest ships in commission have a broadside fire over double that possessed by the "Dreadnought," and several vessels at present under construction are 600 ft long, compared with the 490 ft of the original ship of the type. —-The Sphere."
