HOLSTEIN DAIRY HERD.
A SPLENDID RETURN. DESPITE AX UN-FAVOURABLE SEASON.
FIFTEEN COWS TESTED. The " VVuikato livde-pendent" says: — '" Working ou scientific lines, and keeping careful daily records of returns, Mr. C. ('. BuckJand, ot Monavalc. i.s now in a position to give correct data showing the returns of butter fat given by all hi.s Holstein cows that were placed under the. Government semi-official testing up to June 30. Fifteen cows were entered, all bred by Mr. W. .1. Woods. They were not specially picked out, but the first 15 that calved last spring were entered. Conditions were -fairly favourable up to the end of January, but the dry spell then eiTconMitered, followed by little autu-tmi growth and a cold winter, prevented tbie cows putting up as high 'records as bh«y would -have done in a more favourable season. Most of them, however, axe still making fairly well, and will considerably increase their yield of milk aJKI butter-fat for the twelve months' period. On account of the latter part of the .season able tic cows Unit came in first have, generally speaking, dono better than those that calved later. This coming season Mr. (Buckland intends to put another lot of cows under the test, most of which will consist of heifers imported from Canada. If they milk anything like tis well as their fema.le ancestors they should give a good account of thein-se.l-ap.s. Mr. Bi&kland is building up a herd of pure Holsteirts. on which he has aljvady spent hundreds o-f pounds. It will be seen from the tabu-rated table. bolow that the five year and over cows averaged 3601b5. of butter fat for 300 days' milking, with an average return of lO,l7nibs. of milk. Tht> three-yoar-olds returned an average of 25'21bs. butter-fat, whilst the return from the two-year-olds is rranarkably good. Taken altogether, the return is highly interesting and instructive to d»iry farmers generally. Records to June ."0, 191.1. Mature, cow.s (5 years and overl.
