HARBOUR BOARD CONFERENCE
COST OF ELECTIONS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association^ WtELLINGTON, this day. Mr R. Fletcher (chairman of the Wellington Hsrbonr Board), presiding at a. coherence of delegates representing the. Harbour Boards of the Dominion, opened io-day, said the most important matters to "be discussed were the cost of ■harbour hoard election*, acqrasiiaon "by the Government of harbour board lands ■without making adequate payment for the same, and the intention of the Government not to make provision for mail steamers to pay foT services rendered by the various boards. A proposal was made that each candidate for election to harbour boards should deposit £10, and if be does not poll one-eighth of the votes polled by the successful candidate polling the fewest votes, he shall forfeit his deposit. This aroused a good deal of discussion. The amount of the deposit was eventually fixed at £3. A motion that the old scheme of elec--tion of harbour boards, i.e., by nomination by local bodies, where possible, be reverted to, "wais negatived.
