The driver states that the signals j showed the main line clear. | The offirials are mystified as to how the train was deflected on to the loop. The stationary train consisted of ■ thirty empty trucks. The speed of the i express h.id been creatly reduced by the brake?, otherwise the impact would have | been heaiier and the result serious. ATI j t>he trucks were damaged. The driver of j the express stuck to his post, but the fireman jumped, off after putting on the brakes. There i= a conflict of evidence regarding th» signals. It is supposed that somethins went wrong with the inxerloekimr gear, and that the line was apparently set clear when it was not.
