BURGLARY IN CHRISTCHURCH

TWO MEN ARRESTED. <By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHUBOH. Saturday. Two men were apprehended by the police to-day. One of them is charged with having on April 5 broken and entered the book, stall at the Government railway station at CbristcJmrch, and with having etolcn therefrom £~> in money, tobacco valued at-3/, and a bag valued at 5/, The other man is cbjtrgtd with having stolen some tools, in-iludisg several bite. Two burglaries were recen-tly committed a.t Riccarton, the houses of George Harris and VV. G. Jamieson being broken into. Both houses are situated on the west belt. CHRISTCITURCH, this day. The police believe that the man they arrested on Saturday is responsible for a series of burg-aries which have been perpetrated in the city and eu-burbs. He lias been shadowed far a fortnight. He slept in an unoccupied house in the backyard of which a large quantity of plate ■was fonnd buried. He is a Canadian, and the police say he has 'been three years in the Dominion.

Fourteen houees liavp been bnrgrarioiisly entered since April 2!), and over £400 worth of goods stolen. From Mrs. Palmer's residence £150 worth was stolen, and from other houses. £74, £70 and £60 respectively. Tn connection with the burglary cases, Arthur Thomas Reid. ;i young man. appeared, in the -Mugistrate's Court to-day to answer several ••h»rg«s of theft. One charge -alleged the theft of poods, chiefly jewellery, valued at £100, from Mrs Hannah Pringlo. Walter M. Hulston also appeared, charged with breaking :ind entering a railway bookstall. Both of the accused were remanded for a week. Bail wa.s not allowed.
