THE SMITHFIELD STRIKE.

Regarding' the Smithfieid butchers' strike,' the only definite news is that more men have, been taken on, and that 40 were.on the board- to-day.. AU the other men w-ere in their places. The trouble spread to the Pareora works, where the . unionist, butchers ceased work this afternoon, five men staying on. . After hearing from the union secretary, who went' North with Mr P. C. Webb to-day, the striking butchers and waterside workers invited the managers of the freezing works t and the shipping companies to a conference this morning, but the managers declined. The Smitbfield manager said the time for a conference had gone by; the shipping men, that they had nothing to confer about, and did not want to be dragged into the other dispute. -Both the freezing companies say they will not take on again any of the butchers who have gone out, and will have no more to do with them. As' regards loading the Zealandic, the exporters say they will find men if the waterside workers refuse the work, and if they try to block the boat at other ports they will find men for these places also.
