SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
PAKNELL.
The revenue of tlie Parncll School Committee for the past year just about equnlled the expenditure, the small debit balance ot the previous twelve months amounting to lOd. having been altered to a credit ol Oil. The annual report mentions the appointment of Mr C. H. Frayling as chairman upon the resignation of Mr Bines, and it was stated that the new chairman's enthusiasm had resulted in the Board's architect having promised a number of much needed alterations to the building in the near future. The report placed on retiord the Committee"s appreciation of the good wort done by Mr Bines during the 16 years he has been connected with the committee. Appreciation was also expressed of the good wort done by the late headmaster, Mr J. L. Scott, who retired on superannuation, after holding that position,for IS years. Before leaving. Mr Scott was presented by the Mayor, on behalf of the householders, with a handsome service of silver plate. The honours taken by the pnpil showed the high standard of scholarship maintained by the successive headmasters did not suffer daring the time the school was in charge of Mr Warren, the first assistant. The report also thanked Mr H. Lloyd Brett for arranging the successful school concert. Certificates of proficiency were gained by 51 pupils in standard VI, two of competency, and only one scholar failed. The average roll for the year was 0!»7.2, against (513-2 last year. William Abraham gained n junior scholarship, and the committee awarded him the Hutton prize. The committee expressed regret at the abolition of such an admirable institution as the school cadets. Reference was made to the need of more playground.
EPSOM.
The past year is reported as a successful one by the Kpsom School Committee. Standard VI. results at the examination were very good, the 41 scholars entered all gaining certificates of proficiency. In sports the school has done remarkably well during the year. The school football team won every match, and now holds the championship of C grade. The school is also the holder of the I Gnnson Shield. In cricket the competitions are still on: the school team had only one defeat so far. The attendance has been good at the school, although epidemics in the epring had a prejndical result. Since the Christmas holidays the attendance has beeu very satisfactory. Notwithstanding the opening of the Manngawhan school, the attendance at Epsom school had not been diminished, the roll standing at r>l2. The three inspectors who visited the school reported satisfaction with the excellent work done.
