AUCKLAND'S NEW BUILDINGS.
RECORD TEAR FOR THE Cn_". TOTALS. CLOSE OK £400,000. BETTER TYPE STRUCTURES. Recognising that there has been a great amount of building done in the city during the year ended March 31, 1913, a representative of the "AucklandStar" waited upon the Inspector (Mr J. H. Maxwell) to get an idea of the report, that 'will iv due course be submitted to the Council. It is yet too early to get the exact figures, but Mr Maxwell kindly furnished some interesting particulars regarding the year's operations in the building line. He remarked that it had been a record year, exceeding by over £90,000 that of the previous twelve months, which had likewise been a record to that date. Mr Maxwell added that, although there was some talk just now about dullness in the building line, it did not seem to apply to the city proper, but the fact that men who had been engaged in speculative building in the suburbs were now tendering for jobs in the city might mean there was less being done outside at tlie present time. The building returns for the year ended March 31, 191*2, showed the total value of the work to be £308,000. That, as already staled', was a record for Auckland, which midvcs it all the more remarkable that for the twelve months ended March 31, 1913. the amount is just under £400,000, although the actual correct figures are not yet in the hands of the Council. Amongst the principal buildings Mr Maxwell mentioned the following for which permits were granted last year:— Queen Street. —[lardy Bros., Eady's. AM.P. building, Hallcnstcin Bros., and Ellison Bros. Customs Street—Briscoe and McNeill, A. and T. Burt (addition), and L.OB. Timber Company's offices. Edcu Crescent — Additions to Cargen. Air .Maxwell remarked that an important feature is the-excellent type of the buildings now being erected in the city, reinforced concrete coming more into use, also that Ellison's new buildings are to be of steel frame with concrete.
