VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE.

PANIC IN MASTERTON.. OTHER DISTRICTS BADLY SHAKEN. A MAORI KILLED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) MASTERTON, Sunday. : One of the niost violent earthquakes ever experienced in. the district occurred at ten minutes past seven last night. A small shake was first felt; and was followed by a most severe shock, which lasted nearly 30 seconds. People were panic-stricken, and rushed into the street. Buildings swayed to and fro, and a good deal of -damage was done. A piece of-plaster fell from ths tower of the post office, and struck a native named Hoani Ngawhero Marakaia, of Hamua, oh the head, killing ihim instantly. The deceased was' 18 years of age. Many chimneys were damaged. The earthquake was severely felt in the surrounding districts. In Gladstone many chimneys were Drought down, and crockery was smashed. At Carterton, as in Masterton, people became alarmed and rushed into the streets. The duration of the shake was between 20 and 30 seconds. Another slight shock was experienced at four minutes past three this afternoon. WELLINGTON, this day. The Post.Office advises that the earthquake at Masterton damaged the upper portion of the Post Office tower. Only one piece (ornamental) fell. The balance of the structure is a good deal cracked. VIOLENT SHOCKS IN WELLINGTON. . WELLINGTON, Sunday. -' Two violent earthquakes shook Wellington at 7.10-o'clock last night. Their direction appeared to be from east to. •west. No damage is reported. ' ' SEVERE AT WANGANUL WANGANUI, Sunday. A severe and prolonged earthquake was felt here about 7.10 pjiu on Saturday. - No damage is reported. PROLONGED QUAKE IN PALMERSTON. PALMERSTON NORTH, Sunday. A heavy and prolonged earthquake was felt here about 7 o'clock 'last evening. The shock was the heaviest experienced for some years, but no damage isreport cd. MOST SEVERE FOR YEARS. FOXTON, Sunday.
