THE GOLDFIELDS.
WAIOTAHI COMPANY. APPLICATION FOR DIAMOND DRILL. BORING TO 1,000 FEET. The directors of the Waiotahi Gold Mining Co. have applied to the Government for the use of the diamond drill for the purpose of boring from the bottom of the shaft on that Company s mine, to connect with the Victoria subsidiary crosscut at I,oooft. The Waiotahi shaft is now down 546 ft., and that Company cannot at present get any lower, owing to the accumulated water, which is not drained off by the crosscut at I,oooft. The Victoria subsidiary crosscut is immediately below the Waiotahi Company's shaft. A bore put down to the Victoria crosscut would have the effect of draining the workings in the Waiotahi mine. It will also be of great advantage to the work in the deep level crosscut, as such a borehole would greatly improve the ventilation of the low workings. Once the water has drained off, the Waiotahi Company proposes to continue its shaft down to I,oooft. The only other alternative would be to rise from I,oooft, but that work would be necompanietl by many difficulties, including those of water and ventilation. It will be an immense gain to the prosecution of work at the I,oooft. crosscut once the Waiotalii shaft is deepened to 1,000 ft., as it will provide a means ol exit for the miners in case of accident. It would also give ample ventilation, and save the cost of trucking material all the way to the Queen of Beauty shaft to raise it to the surface. With a work of so much importance to Thames, it is not anticipated, there will be any trouble in transferring the loan of the drill from the Thames Deep Levels Board of Management to the Waiotahi Company, a3 it will be really a continuation of the development work at I,oooft. The project is approved by the Advisory Committee of the deep levels Board, and also by Mr Bennie, Government Izepector of Mines. In his ordinary weekly report, Mr G. Warne reporte regarding work in the mine, that the drive east on the main reef at No. 7 level is in 96ft. from the footwaJl proper. The reef is getting more denned, and ie now about 2ft. in w.idth. During the week some favourable minerals have been eeen, but the bulk of the quartz ie of a course nature. The country is somewhat disturbed. The stopes at the junction of the new and crocs reefe have produced 40 tons of quartz of low grade; 40 tone treated yielding £17. The Victoria croeecut a.t I,oooft. is now in 460 ft from the main tunnel. A further 40ft. of driving will complete the distance for which the De»p Levels Board is responsible. A few email stringers of quartz are running with the crosscut. NEW WAITEKATJRI. The liquidators of the New Waitekauri Company, Messrs. W. Blomfield and H. Gilfillan, have disposed of the mine and 48-stamp battery, with cyanide plant, the purchasers being Messrs. Jougnin and Hume, contractors, of Waihi. MOUNT MORGAN RETURNS.
