Xo exception was taken to the grade, but it was decided, on the motion of Mr Tattersfleld, to intimate that in some points the proposed formation was not up to the standard required in the borough, and, further, it was agreed that the work must be in conformity with what was required in the cutting up of other estates in Grey Lynn.

Stone-crushing.—A rather lengthy discussion followed upon a question by Mr MooreJones regarding the Board's newly-purchased stone-crtjsner. The chairman contended that in view of the present famine in road metal so far as the regular quarries were concerned, the Board would almost certainly get metal cheaper, by crushing than by buying the stuff already crushed. Mr Moore-Jones, however, was unconvinced, and declared, that the cost would -work out at 8/ or 9/ a yaid, instead of 3/ as the chairman estimated. Roading Conditions. —In reference to a letter from the engineers in charge of the roading of Biii-wood Park Estate, Mγ Moore-Jones moved the suspension of standing orders, and then moved tliat the laying of -water mains be deleted from the Board's conditions for the loading of subdivided estates. He also urged the modification of the conditions, so as to allow of the formation of by-roads in scoria. m It -was decided, after some discission, to hold a special meeting on March 4 to go into the matter.

The erection of the building will, however, be considered with others during the present

Pumping StatiorL—A report was received from the engineer concerning the new pumping station. It stated that the lift pump is fixed, reaching- SOft below the surface. The delivery pipes were also fixed. The pumps now deliver 270,000 gallons per day. and, estimating the population at this represented a consumption of 30 gallons per head. This is a large rate, and the engineers advised that since no increase is likely in the springs, it would be well to practise economy. Destroy Footpath.—lt was decided to institute legal proceedings against a number of employees of J. J. Craig and Co., Ltd., for destroying a footpath in Melvery Road.

One-tree Hill Drainage Scheme.—The Mayor and councillors received , an invitation from the One-tree Hill Road Board requesting the pleasure of their company at the turning of the first sod in connection jjwitli the drainage scheme. Members who ■jjre able to attend will be present. Tar Finance and Legal Committee and the Works Committee met on the 17th inst., and decided to recommend the Council to carry out tar-spraying experiments by treating , 12 chains of Toadway iv Station Road, at an estimated cost of ifeO: also to tar the footpath in Station Road from the station to Moa Street, at a cost of £23. and that the work be paid for out of the loan. The Mayor stated that it was proposed to tar-spray the road from Huia Road to the railway station. The town clerk remarked that this was the only suitable road to tar-spray. Mr O'Hara said that the money to be used in tar-spraying was loan money borrowed for the purpose of improving the Great South Road. The Mayor said the idea in tar-spraying Station road was to demonstrate the advantages of it. Mr J. Brady thought the Council should have a guarantee that not more than £75 would be expended on the experiment; but he objected to tar-spraying a road; that was not properly formed. Mr O'Hara proposed that the cost of the experiment be not taken out of loan money, but out of the ordinary revenue." Mr J. Brady seconded the motion, and remarked that the money would be better expended on Moa Street than on Station Road. Mr J. Atkinson stated that they could not afford to take the amount required , out of the revenue. The amendment was rejected, and the committee's recommendations were adopted.

Mangere Bridge.— Ihe Council discussed the bridge question, and Mr Harbutt remarked that apparently the Mangere people could cite whom they pleased to contribute to the bridge and omit what district they liked. The Mayor said that Papatoetoe had been omitted, although the bridge wonld be more used *y the people of that locality than by any others. Mr J. E. Taylor was permitted to address *c Council on the subject, and stated that Papatoetoe was omitted on a technical objection. Origlrrally, it was never contemplated tiat Otahuhu should be called upon to contribute anything to defray the cost of the bridge. Mr Taylor epoke of his solid embankment scheme as one suited to the whole district, and one of much importance* to trade nnd navigation. He did not think that Otahuhu conld be called upon to contribute to a fevro-concrete bridge. If they allowed Mangere to erect snch a bridge, they would regret it. The Council decided that the Mayor and town -clerk represent them at a -conference of toe Ellersli« o«4 MeutH Weulnzton Board* on the eakjeet Mr J. Brady coflafden4 that it Otahuhu -was compelled to contribute to ifc* bridge, the; BhoalA stand ont tor * eoUt taOnatmesi, which -iroofcl *c A fefßCfit i» t&e <jrfeoi» <H»fcrict.
