SOUTH ATICKIiAND RACES. SECOND DAY. MAXWELL WINS THE WAIKATO HANDICAP. (By Telegraph.—Own Corr _"ponden_.)

HAMILTON, Saturday. Several heavy showers fell during the ] night, and up to about ten o'clock, when the wind sprang up and the rain ceased, the] ; afternoon being fine for the second day of the South Auckland Meeting. The course -, was not affected by the rain, and the at- " tendance was larger than on the opening day. Mr Jackman was much more successful at the barrier than on Friday. ! THE FAVOURITE SUCCESSFUL. In the opening event, which brought out a field of ten, Salvia was made very hot, Clare having just half the money on the favourite invested on her chance, but outside Geneva the others only met with halfhearted support. There was a long delay at the post, Clare giving a lot of trouble, and the despatch was only a moderate one. Geneva was quickest out, followed by Union . Jack, Clare and Barbwlre, while the favour- , ite was slow to move. There was no change in the positions as they crossed the top and turned for home, but when fairly in the straight Barbwlre and SaMa challenged, and, after an interesting race, the latter got the verdict by a neck. Geneva was half a length away third, and then came Clare and Union Jack. After the race Mr Gordon, the stipendiary steward present, censured Brown, the rider of Clare, for not keeping his mount straight in tbe concluding stages. A FINE RACE. The Shorts Handicap, a four-furlong scramble, induce-l seven owners to start their horses, and backers were divided between Urukehu and Mighty Atom, the for mer being the shade netter favourite. Both Lucille aud Bow IleUs had friends, while Positive also had a little support. Lucille was again troublesome at the post, but they left ln fairly even line. Mighty Atom, as usual, being quickest to begin, followed by Bow Bells, Positive, Urukehu and LucUle, and in this order they entered the straight. At the distance Mighty Atom and Positive were racing together in the lead, but a little further on LuciUe, Bow Bells and Urukehu all challenged, and a great race resulted In Lucille getting up in the last stride and snatching a victory by a head from Positive, with Mighty Atom a similar distance away third, and Urukehu and Bow Bells together a head away. AN EASY WIN. The Hurdle Handicap, for which eight started, was a good betting race, Hoanga being a better favourite than Sunray, with Ambergris next in request, while there was also money for Surplus aud Seaman. When they were let go Captain Paul and Surplus made the pace solid, the pair having a dozen lengths' advantage of Hoanga, Sunray, Seaman and Ambergris, which were close to-' gether. Going along the back, Sunray ran up to Captain Paul, while Surplus fell away beaten. Crossing the top, Sunray took charge, and eventually won as he liked by half a dozen lengths from Ambergris, which gained second honours by a length from Seaman, which Jnst beat Captain Paul. Waltangi fell, but his rider escaped without injury. MAXWELL AGAIN. Of the eight horses that contested the Waikßto Handicap, the principal event of the day, Maxwell was a strong order, with Phosphorus next in request, the order of the others ln the betting being Dido, Jolle FlUe, Admiral Sonlt. Kotiropu, Monocle and Explosive, but the last-named quartet did not carry much money. Wheu the signal was given to go Maxwell got out in front, but leaving the straight Kotiropu ran into the lead, and led along the back, foUowed by MaxweU, with Phosphorus, Admiral Soult. and Dido in a bnnch. Crossing tbe top, , Admiral Sonlt shot to the front, closely at- ' tended by MaxweU, with Phosphorus at the head of the others. Maxwell headed Admiral Sonlt at the distance, and easUy stalling off a challenge by Phosphorus, won as he liked by a length and a-half. Jolie FiUe, which finished fast, was a similar distance away third. Just in front of Admiral Soult, the last to finish being Kotiropu.

After the race for the Waikato Handicap, Stennlng, the rider of Kotiropu, was fined for cutting in as the field left the straight THE FAVOURITE SCORES. In the District Welter Handicap, for which the whole ten acceptors started, Vie was backed as something approaching a moral, the only others to meet with anything like decent support being Peria and Union .Jack. Haritah and Napper Tandy made the early running, but crossing the top Vie went to the front, and led into the straight. At the distance Hamlet came through, and put in a strong challenge, Vie having to be hard ridden to win by a length. Peria, which was badly placed ln the early stages, was third. THE TWO-YEAR-OLDS. The same quartet that contested the Pioneer Handicap on the opening day, saddleup for the Ruakura Handicap, and the bracketed pair, Tinopal and King Lupin, carried the most money, but Tikitapu had a lot of friends. Tinopal was first out, and, joined by King Lupin, the pair raced together to the straight, where King Lupin drew out, and eventually won easily by three lengths from Obdurate, with Tikitapu third. TATTOO WINS. The good field of 11 contested the Welter Handicap, and Tattoo was made a better favourite than Almeida, Virtue and Manurewa, whUe support was also forthcoming for Blue Garment, Miss Livonia and Aristocrat. There was a lot of trouble at the post, but they left to the best despatch of the meeting. Miss Livonia and Master Jack made the running to the turn for home, where Tattoo, Aristocrat and Virtue were their nearest attendants. Tattoo got through , next to the rails and, stalling off a strong chaUenge by Cloudy Dawn, won by two lengths. Master Jack was half a length away third, just in front of Virtue, Aristocrat, Blue Garment and Almeida, which finished In a bunch. THE CURTAIN FADLS. The concluding event, the Farewell Handicap, brought out nine runners, and the bulk of the money went on Holiungatahi, Urukehu and Lucille,, the former being the favourite, but only a pound better than Urukehu. The despatch was an even one, Hohungatahi being first to break the line] and he was never afterwards troubled, winning easUy by three lengths from LuciUe. which was a similar distance in front of Geneva. j THE TOTALISATOR. I Speculation was brisk, and during the afternoon the ■__. al £10,569 10/ was han-.
