MARINE ENGINEERS' DEMANDS.

UNION COMPANY'S POSITION. When the Marine Engineers' Institute presented its demands to the Union Company some time ago, a conference of the interest—i parties was at once arranged, and it was then thought that some amicable settlement of differences would be reached without the necessity of going to Court. However, there are a number of points upon which the Company and the engineers have so far been unable to agree, and in consequence, the Union Steamship Company has made formal application to have the dispute I heard before tbe Conciliation Council.

The institute has about 600 members, 300 of which are employed ashore. The remainder are nearly all em-ployed in the Union Company's fleet. The rate of pay and conditions of employment are the matters in dispute, and it is the desire of the engineers to 6ecure the same conditions as those recently gained by the Australian institute. One of the principal points made by the employees is that overtime should be paid for any period longer than eight hours in one day, but the Company, it is stated, wish to pay overtime only for the time in exj cess o f 56 hours in one week. ! (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) I WELLINGTON this day. The Union Steamship Company has made a formal application to have the dispute in which it is at present engaged with the marine engineers in its employ heard before the Conciliation Council. The other party to the dispute is the I Marine Engineers' Institute.
