IIEWIUSXR,' The usual meeting of the Xtwmarket Borough Council held last night wag presided over by the Mayor, Mr D. Teed. A letter was read from a ratepayer complain. - ing that bis valuation was too high, and asking if a reduction could Bet be mutually agreed upon. The Mayor, referring to the rates of the borough, mentioned that Iα spite of the fact that the Cornell had spent £30,000 the valuation had only 'gone up nine per cent. Last year the rental values were £30,000, and this year they were £33,000. There were complaints in, some quarters that the valuations were too high, but he did not think this conld be said of the borough. It was agreed that the application would have to go before the Assessment Conrt. The weekly report of the engineer mentloned that the various works now nnder way in the borough were progressing sati*. factorily. It was remarked that the tarmacadam now being laid flown wtsnineh, better than it was when first started. -
MOUNT WELUKGTOH.
The monthly meeting of the Mount Wri. lington Koad Board was held list evening. The Board accepted the resignation of Mr A. Bell as returning officer, and the Clerk was instructed to thank him for his services. The Board appointed their clerk to discharge the duties of returning officer. An application was received from the Pakaranga Road Board for a part of the Fanmnre quarry reserve for the purpose ot obtaining blue metal therefrom,, and. ukiat upon what terms the Board would lease a portion of the 12} acres. The Board' instrutted the Clerk to invite a depotatlot from the applicants to attend the next- Betting of the Board, so that their exact re. quirements might be ascertained. The Chairman reported that he and tht Clerk, together with the Board's solicitor, proposed traversing the district, in order that the solicitor might be posted- up t» represent the Board at the forthcoming in. quiry to be held by Mr Kettle, as to - the allocation of the cost of constructing the Mangere Bridge. It was resolved thit.ft* Board join hands with the Otalrahn Borona Council and the Ellerslie Town Board to take a tally of the traffic passing over tie old bridge at Mangere, and that Mean* Wymer and Wood represent the Beard it any conference convened for joint action. 7 The tender of Mr O. J nil, of Panmnre, mi accepted for tarring and sanding footpttfc at 7/6 per chain—labour only. The tenia of Mr A. Hewitson, of Ellerelie, was accept, ed for the erection of a Board office, and flw tender of Mr H. B. Wymer was accepted far. forming a footpath on the Great Sotfk Road for the benefit of the employee at the works at Westfieid, the amount of toiler being £117 5/. , - ,;,.,.•
