TERRITORIAL NOTES.

(By RIFLEJCAJU

The Hon. Minister for Defence has approved of men permanently employed as firemen being exempted from ™utary training but the concession is not to be extended to volunteer firemen. Range fixtures for March are as follow:— Ist March, Ft. 111., standard test, 100, 200, and 500 yards. Bth March, 25 and 200 yards loth March, Pt. 111., standard test, ltu, 200, and 500 yards. 22nd March, 300 yards. 29th March, 400 yards. '•I drive a doctor's motor car." "I have to work too hard.' "I have not time "It's too hard on my legs." "I haven t got a uniform." These were some of the excuses put forward by Territorials at the Napier Court when they were charged witn failine to render personal service under the Defence Act. Fines of 20/ with 7/ costs were inflicted. His Worship pointed out to the voting men that if tfcey came before Mm again they would be deprived of tne,r civil rights. Territorials in camp are not overworked; neither are they encouraged uaduly to regard the camp other than with proper seriousness. It is to be distinctly understood, 6ays a memorandum from headquarters wi.h re-ard to recreation in camp, that spo.te nre not to be considered when drawing up the syllabus of training for the period of camp. The fu'l amount of training is to ba carried on each working day, and what recreation there may be Iβ to take place after parade, and is on no account to interfere with training.

A recent district order states, with reference to an order of May last, that the Standing Board of Audit will cease to diral with capitation claims after the end of the current month. The claims of Officers Command4ng units, who fail to furnish by that time the information required by the aboTe order, will be liable to exclusion from consideration, and officers concerned will have to make their own arrangements to satisfy the demands of creditors. The rates of pay for officers, -non-coms, and men of the Territorial force while In training camps will be on the following scale:—Colonels. £1 X! per day; lieutenantcolonels, 13/; majors. 12/: captains, 10/; lieutenants and second lieutenants, 8/; ser-Ceants-major, staff sergeants, and coloursergeantE, 5/6; sergeants, 5/; corporals, 4/6; other ranks. When it is necessary o detail parties to pitch or strike camp, an amount of 4/ per diem may toe paid for each extra day, not exceeding four days, so employed, to N.C.O.'s and men, in addition to free rations. There appears to be come misapprehension with regard to the attendance of Senior Cadet officers at annual camps. All such officers who were unable to attend the special class of instruction held at Hamilton from 20th to 25th "Jnnuary are required to attend the Infantry Brigade camp, and will be attached to Infantry Regiments according to the groups in which they ore permanently serving. All' Senior Cadet officers should make arrangements, therefore, w.thont delay, for attachment, accommodation, etc., with the adjutant of the regiment concerned. There has been some misunderstanding about the disposal of empty small arms ammunition cases. An order has been issued intimating that these wai be deemed the property of the regiment, untt, etr.. concerned, except such as are expended by units making ns>e of the Penrose range— from which ground no empty cases are to he removed, ns special instructions exist for thoir disposal. With the above exception empty cases may be disposed of by direct on of O.C. units, the proceeds to be paid Into regimental accounts. In no case are they to be disposed of, or retained, by Individuals. A Wellington firm quotes £42 per ton for empty cases. .An idea appears to be prevalent that the only Territorials who are entitled to proceed to camps for the four extra days are those who, liTlng in outlying and distant centres, are allowed to train for four extra days in lieu of attending 20 drills during the year. This impression Is incorrect. Anyone who so desires can attend for the four pstrn days, and it is earnestly hoped that all officers, inclnding -Senior Cadet officers, will do so, -but It must be remembered that rations only will be given and that no pay or allowances will be granted for this extra period.
