PAEROA ASSAULT CASES.

PAEROA, Friday.

The informations against Rogers, Mudford and Dye, charged with having ueed insulting language on the 'Psefoa railway station to Wm. Penno and Basil Smith, on January last, and against Rogere for assaulting Wm. Pernio at toe sxme time, which ■were commenced at the PaeToa\ ■Magistrate's Court on. Thursday, were continued to-d-ay. All the cases arose out of a row between a party of "Federation supporters" and two lads about 19 ■years of age who went to work at the Waihi mine prior to the '•'calling off" of the strike.

The evidence for the prosecution, wa* commenced yesterday, when Smith and Penno gave evidence as to being called "scabs" and other offensive names by the three defendants. Penno also ewore that Rogers punched him. Several other witnesses, including the guard on the train, a railway porter, a-nd several passengers, gave evidence which substantiated the ervidence of both Smith and Pemw.

IAII of the defendants denied having ueed any offensive language on the Paeroa railway station on January 2. Ropers aleo denied having assaulted Penno, but eaid that he had an -argument with both Smith and Penno and: tried to explain the meaning of "scab" to them. He also swore that Smith struck him.

Dye also swore positively that Ilogoie was under his observation all the time that the tow was on, and that Rogere did not hit Penno.

After Dye had given, his evidence, the •Magistrate stated that he was not prepared to convict Dye, and diemneed the information against him.

The cases against the other defendant* are proceeding.
