Speaking at the dinner to the visiting ■M-P.'b at Lmnsden, one of the northern members eaid that Southland had been peopled toy herd-headed Scotchmen. Later, a Southiandcr took exception to the statement, and said that there had been a goodly percenage of hard-working Irishmen in the province, who had mostly emerged from the ditches they had delved with a legacy of rheumatism. Their descendants in Southland to-day were among the brightest and best that the province possessed.
