RACING NEWS.

TABAPTTKA J.C. SUMMER MEETING. CONCLUDING DAY. ELECTRAKOFF WINS THE BIG EVENT. The Takapuna J.C. Summer Meeting was cnnclu-led on Saturday in fine weather and with a record attendance. The racing was nt a hlgh-rlass character thrnrihgout. and the gathering was easily the most snecessfn' yet held by the suburban club. THE OPENING EVENT. The opening event, the Moana Handicap, brought out a field of thirteen. Toreador being the only withdrawal. Makura was made favourite, but St. Lewis and Allegation carried a lot of money, while there was also support for Phosphorus and Mary Ann. Phosphorus made the early running, but three furlong* from home Allegation went to the front, and though Phosphorus put iv a good run from the turn home he could not quite get up. Allegation winning by a neck, with tiie favourite, which got a bad run, half a length away third. Allworthy fell racing along the hack, and was lame when lie returned to the paddock. His rider, J Hrady, escaped with a shaking. The stipendiary stewards inquired into the falling of. AUworthjr, the evidence of his rider (J. caused by the horse crossing his legs, and was purely accidental.

THE FAVOURITE WINS. Shebeen was made very warm for the Takapuna Hurdles, carrying as much money as the next best hacked fonr horses pnt together. Kxplosive was second choice, while there was a little money for Tiri and Heyboy. but the others were practically neglected. Miss Livonia made the early running, but when it came to racing there was only ono in it. the favourite winning as she liked from Pip. which paid a good second dividend, with Explosive third.

THE FAVOFRITE SECOND. The whole of the acceptors came out for the Subnrban Handicap, and backers went strongly for Overtime, with Apelion next in request, just a little better backed than Red Lupin, while Bine Garment, Elegance, Kotiropu and Bow Bells had friends. Lncllle and Mighty Atom set the pace, but once in a line for home Apelion. whicb was always well placed, took charge, and won nicely by tbree parts of a length from the favourite, with Blue Garment the same distance away.

EI.ECTRAKOFF AT LAST. The field for the Takapnna J.C. Handicap was rodnced to half a dozen by the withdrawal of La Reina, and Electrakoff and Tiresome carried the bnlk of the investments, the former being the slightly better favourite. Jolie Mile and Semolina had friends, hut the other two starters were practically neglected. Backers picked it in two. a».ii after Semolina and Ruatangata had indulged in a game of cut-throat, the fa Touritps appctixcfi on tJin scene and after a desperate race Electrakoff got the verdict by a short head, giving his owner an overdue win.

THE TWO-TEAR-OLDS. Lady Alicia was served up a strong favourite for the Uobson Handicap, King Luphi being 6econd in request, bnt there was any amount of money for LoJoma. The favourite lest some ground at tlie start, and could never gpt up with the leaders, and Loloma after staying with Kins LnpSn to the turn for homp. drew out and scored her maiden victory by a length and a-quartor, with the favourite a poor third.

TOREADOPv AGAIN. The withdrawal of Virtue and Spalflsh left only half a dozen to contest the Rangltoto Handicap, and Toreador was made the medium of a solid plimee. Tripoli carried just under half tho amount invested on the favourite, while Worcester and Kotlropu had a number of friends. The race proved to be the good thing the betting made out, for Toreador beginning qnickly, never gave his supporters any cause for anxiety, winning nicoly from Elegance, which had a great battle with Kotiropn for second honours, which she secured by a head.

THE JUMPERS. Only fipe came out for the Waiwera Hurdles, but four of the five runners met with support. Surplus being a little better favourite than Miss Explosion, with Seaman and Hyperion -well backed, the outsider being The Chef. The favourite made the pace solid, and at one stage looked like coming in on his own, but tired badly, and when Hyperion challenged failed to respond, and the latter won somewhat easily, with Seaman third.

THE CONCLUDING EVENT. In the concluding event, the Anniversary Welter, Virtue was made a better favourite than Admiral Soult, with Worcester, Master Jack, and Semolina all well backed. Master Jack was left at the post, and Worcester getting to the front half a mile from home, won easily.

THE TCrTALISATORS. Speculation was brisk, fhe snm of £26,306 10/ passing through the machines, making a total of £50,900 for the meeting, as a garnet. £41.307 last year. CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHCRCH, Saturday. The opening event was the Trial States, for which, there were eleven starters. Scottish Star was rather better backed than Carolus and Cannte. Carolus was first to begin, but Golden Morn soon ran past him, and led to the straight, where Carolus, Martian Maid, and Stamboul were all prominent. Golden Morn dropped out, and Carolus went on in front, and stalling off a late run by Ladrone, won by a length. Martian Maid was three lengths away, just in front of Scottish Star and Canute. The winner is a three-year-old by Charlemagne— Nautiloid, and is thus a halt-brother to Pilgrim's Way. He gallops well, and looks a useful sort. Cannte and .Scottish Star were running on well in the straight. There were nine starters for the Hornby Welter Handicap, KHmeny being favourite, with Winning Way and Editha best backed of the others. Winning Way was first out, and at the end of a furlong she had Federal in close attendance. These two were still in charge turning for home, where the field closed np. At the distance Kilmeny and Medallist joined Winning Way in the lead, and Kilmeny won a good race by a neck from Medallist, while a length away Aimwell beat Winning Way by a neck. Kilmeny. by Kilchecan—Bulbul, has been a very useful horse during the past twelve months, and he should win more races yet for his West Coast owners. Medallist ran a good race, and must be classed as a wonderfnl old battler. Winning Way was beaten by the distance, after showing a lot of pace.

There were eight starters for the Middle Part Plate, representing five stables, the field being the largest seen in this race for several years. Mr J. B. Reid's bracket Salzburg and Ogier carried a little more money than Sir George Clifford's pair Autumnus and Nightwatch, while Mr G. D. Greenwood's pair Emperador and Historiette were third choice. When the horses could be made out approaching the course proper Salzburg was in front, with Emperador handy. Below trie distance there was not much to choose between Salzburg, Emperador, Nightwatch, and Autumnus, but in the last fifty yards Emperador shook off his opponents and won by half-a-length from with Salzburg nearly a length away, and a head in front of Autumnns. The winner, which was making his first appearance in public, is bred on both sides from English parents, being by Charlemagne IT.—Lady Wayward IL, by Ladas Vane. He had a big allowance, bnt his performance-made Mm out a good horse. The time, 1.13, equals the New Zealand rerorri. >*Ich.twntch ran well. aftPr tret-

ting oft slowly. Salzburg stopped at the finish, but Autunnms ran a good race under his bis weight.

A field of seven lined up for the Midsummer Handicap, Coroniform and Anna Carlovna being almost equal favourites. Anna Carlovna got the worst of an indifferent start, and was several lengths behind the field going out of the straight, where Mumura, Parable, and Gnome were in charge. A little further on Mumura drew to the front and The Cornet moved up, taking second place at the mile post. At this stage Coroniform and Anna Carlovna were in the rear, and they were still there half a mile further on, where Coroniform made a fast move up. Turning for home Mumura was done with, leaving The Cornet and Coroniform in charge. At the distance Anna Carlovna appeared with a great run. and she beat Coroniform by a length, with The Cornet half a length further back. The performance of the winner was full of merit, and it is appearent that she has made great improvement lately. She is by Soult—Czarena, by Stepniak, and she should win again for her owner before the end of the season. Coroniform's form was also good, while The Cornet ran well, though unable to quite see the journey out.

Thirteen hacks lined up for the Halswell Handicap, Editah being a strong favourite, with Thrax second choice. It was a good race all the way. Imp was responsible for the early pace, but at the entrance to the straight he was done with, and half a dozen were in a bunch. Pleasure Bent was in front at the distance, but Foam Flake cut her down in good style and won by a length from Andreae which finished fast and beat another fast finisher, St. Kevin, by half- alengtb, with Editah at the head of the others. The winner is by Calibre—Aqualis. This horse has for some time been shaping fairly well in hack company. There were only three starters for the Final Handicap, and backers sent Stardancer out a hot favourite. Mosgiel made the running, and, turning for home, Tropn also headed the favourite. R. King, however, was only waiting, and, shooting out in the last fifty yards, Stardancer won easily by a neck, Troon being sis lengths away. The winner, whicTi is a three-year-old by Martian—Stepdancer, ran a dead heat with Bon Reve in the Stewards' Handicap and is a smart filly.
