The 7.000 ton liner Veronese owned by the Liverpool, Brazil and River Platte Company, which went on the rocks at the Leixoes Islands, near Oporto, is a total loss. Enonnoas seas washed over the vessel's decks, making it impossible to use the rocket lines for hours, and the breechesbuoy did not reach the unfortunate ship until _c*. en o'clock. Eighty-four of the 37.3 passengers on board have been saved Sixteen were drowned owing to the breaking of the cable oa which the buoy was being worked. The rescue of the passenger- still on board is being continued, but owing to the heavy weather the work is very slow.
