WALKING 52 MILES IN EVENING DRESS.
LONDON TO BRIGHTON IX THINSOCKS AND DANCTNG SHOES. As the outcome of a sporting bet, two members well known in London clubland have walked from Piccadilly to Brighten, one in evening dress and both in thin socks and dancing pumps (says a London exchange of December T). The bet was made one evening at the Isthmian Club, and. It Is said, ran well Into four figures. The condition was that tbe couple should" walk to Brighton, one in evening dress, and both in dancing shoes, in twenty-four hours. One of the gentlemen was _r. Eric Maturin. When the Journey was started at m.'dnight. Mr. Maturin wore white "shorts," a flannel shirt, and the necessary thin socks and dancing v pumps. and the other gentleman wore evening dress. They were attended by two friends, Mr. A. de Mowbray Bellaire and Mr. 11. C. Riddeil, In a motor car. The night was frosty, and the competitors, neither of whom was in any sense of the word a "walking man," made good headway. A stop was made for breakfast
at Crawley. The latter part of the journey was not easy, and. although Mr. Maturin was in good condition, the gentleman in evening dress showed signs of fatigue. Eventually, after a hard battle, the turnstile of the Royal Aquarium was touched at 10.13 on Saturday evening, and the bet won. The successful sportsmen returned to town oo Sunday by motor car none the worse for their adventure.
