The country was now passing through a picturesque period. Prosperity was great, our colonies were drawing "closer, the ambassadors were meeting to narrow the scope of the war, and the navy was playing a vital part, doing more than any other agency to bind the colonies together, leading not merely to national safety, but to Imperial union.
