An Austrian military attache "landed at ■Scutari under the white flag to report the defeats in Thrace and Macedonia. The commandant declined to believe the officer's statements, and declared that Scutari* could hold oiut for thret months. Montenegrin officers, under cover of a white flag, demanded the surrender of Scutari. The commander (Riza Bey) refused* whereupon the Montenegrins occupied Alenssio, a small inland town, and the port of San Giovanni di M-edua, south of Scutari, on the Gulf of Drino.
