A MYSTERY OF THE THAMES.

STORY OF TVTRJCiUiK AND TRAGEDY. Miss Florence Wn.rden is well-known as a writer of powerful and engrossing romances, but she has probably never written one of greater sustained interest .than .that entitled "A Mystery of the Thames.' It is the story of ati English, aristocratic family, a scion of which, already entangled "with a designing widow, seeks marriage with a ■fascinating American heiress. Several lives stand 'between him and the title and estates; he has a cousin, who becomes a rival for the lady's hand; and, in consequence of these complications, a most interesting situation is developed. Theii there is a succession of mysterious tragedies, in which both cousins seem 10 b» involved. Death 'by violence, or under suspicions circumstances. overtakes •those persons who come between the ■two cousins and the inheritance, and the plot thickens until the revelation of the whole villa.my is readied. The intcreet of the tale never flags, and it 'has all the fascination of a detective story, mingled with excellent characterisation, mystifying incident, and has a thread of sentiment interwoven with the sordid love, affairs of one of the cousins. It is that type of a novel which has all the compelling attraction of tragedy, combined with deep human interest. This hivppy ending is m gratifying as the elucidation of the mystery is unexpected. The opening instalment of "A Mystery of the Thames'' will be published in th>'"'Star' , of Monday next, and t>he tale will be continued in future issues.
