He was one of those whe shipped as prisoners for the Chatham Islands. When the ship was outside Wellington, and hie manacles taken off. ho jumped overboard, swam ashore, ami escaped over the Tararua ranges tc Onepuhi, hid there for spme time. L'p to the time of his death Kerati was very robust, and never ill.
