WOUNDED IN THE FACE.
> WIFE EN HOSPITAL. HUSBAND ARRESTED. A young man of 26 years was charged at the Police Court this morning under the name of Harry Knight, alias William Williams, with having assaulted Harriet Knight lust evening so as to cause her actual bodily harm. The. charge arose out of the. fact that the man's wife, who keeps a small .shop at the corner of Hobson end Durham Btrwts. was admitted to the. hospital shortly after U ©"dock last night, suffering from ii severe cut on the upper lip. The allegation is that the man ami woman, the only occupants of the place, had a quarrel, which ended in the latter being struck in the face with some sharp instrument. When . the man was charged this morning, Inspector Hendry asked for a remand for a week, on the ground that the woman was not able to appear. Her condition, he said, was not considered serious, though the wound was very painful, and so situated that had it been inflicted a little more to one side it would have endangered her life. The accused asked foT bail, stating that he was innocent of the charge, and adding that he wished to keep the business together meantime. Tie stated further that he ordinarily followed the occupation of wharf labourer, and had got up only yesterday, after being laid up with injuries caused by his falling from a staging when at work discharging (he barque Joseph Craig on Monday afternoon. . The remand was fn'anled. ami bail was I fixed at two sureties-of .1:100 each.
