OPOSSUM SKINS.
(Bj- Telegraph—Prr-Sis Association.) WELI-IXGTOX. this day. Speaking ai a meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, Mr. L. O Tripp (chairman) paid tie had received notice from the Minister of Internal Affairs that protection of opossums hid been removed. He had also received a letter from a farmer poiatin? out that it was a mistake .to wholly remove protection, a* it would be sufficient to remove it for the winter months only. Winter skins were valuable ones. Mr. Tripp said ho. wa* making Inquiries into bhe subject, with a view to approaching the Government. Good winter skins were -worth ten shillings each, so the ' trade in skins was a valuable one. and it would employ many men in winter, when, as a rule, the general demand for la-bour was easy. Protection could, if required, be removed in fruit districts. Opossum skins were as valuable as store lamb, and the question of protection was important. There was no sport In siiootinfr opossum?, so the matter was purely a commercial one. 1
