THE MATERNITY BONUS.
ARCHBISHOP'S CONDEMNATION (By Cable.-Press Association—Copyright) ■ ('Received 10.55 a,m.) SYDNEY, this day. .At the opening of a bazaar, Archbishop Kelly condemned the maternity bonus. Hie basis on which the fundamental bond 3i Society was to rest was not to be fear iMd love of God, nor the perfection of natural lore. N*o, they looked to political ad material , motives in all things. Australia had seen the acme of improvement, but if such notions were ever adopted it would only he when the people had lost ill conscientious sentiment, and are to be spoken to as some projects oi the law speak to people of Australia. MELBOUKNTE, September 4. A deputation representing the churches bap. protested to the Federal Prime Minister (Mr Fisher) against the granting of the maternity bonus to illegitimate and stillborn children, on the grounds that it would be conducive to immorality. Mr Fisher replied that no arguments would deter the Government from making the allowance to all mothers. If the Government empowered him to spend money in caring for illegitimate children, be would see that it was done.
