TAKAPUNA FATALITY.

OLE MAN'S TRAGIC DEATH. An rideriy man named Owen Carroll was killed by a tram at Takapuna last evening. Carroll left Auckland for Takapuna by the 10.15 p.m. bnat, and those who saw him then declare thut he was quite sober. How he came to be in the vicinity of the tram line an hour later it is difficult to explain. It was as the last car was returning from Milford to the tram barn that the accident happened near Shakespeare's corner. The Bight was dark and rain was falling, and it is thought that Carroll muat have been sitting on the tram track. At any rate, the driver of the engine did not see the man until the engine was right on top of him. Jt was then too late to hope to do anything to save him, and Carroll ■went down under the wheels, and was terribly mangled, his lipad and legs being severed from the body. The remains were conveyed to the Takapuna hotel, and an inquest will be held. Carroll was an old and well-known rpsident of Takapuna, where he followed the occupation of gardener in the employ of Mr G. Jones. He was 70 years of age. and had at one time been a piuni.igger. So far as i.s known he has no relatives in the. Dominion. An inrpiest win be held to-morrow morning at the Takapuna hotel, whero the body now lies.
