CALIFORNIAN BLAZE.
NINETEEN MISSING. MANY THRILLING RESCUES. DAMAGE HALF A MILLION. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) >"EW YORK, September 4. A report of a huge conflagration at Ocean Park on tie western sea coast, which started in a defective flue in a cafe, has been received from Los Angeles. A pleasure pier and a large number of the chief buildings were destroyed, and the total loss is estimated at £500,000. Seven men were caught in tie flames at the end of the pier, and leaped into the surf. Sis of the men were rescued, and the seventh was drowned. Thrilling rescues were made at the Hotel Decautur, where many of the occupants were cut off by the flames. The firemen saved nine babies who were housed within a baby incubator on the pier. The Roman Catholics gathered in St. Clemen's Church aDd offered prayer. The wind shifted shortly afterwards, and the church was not touched, although the surrounding buildings were destroyed.
