DEFICIT OF £40,489. INCREASING BUSINESS. (Received 9-15 β-m. , ) • LONDOX, September 4A Parliamentary paper on cable reductions to Australasia, states that during the first quarters of the year 46,450 •words -were sent at the deferred rate, while the number sent at the normal rate showed an increase in volume. Press business had not been affected, but about half that had been sent at deferred rates. The profit of the operations of the Pacific cable for the year was £37,045, and the deficit, including all liabilities, £40.438. The report emphasises the necessity for future Australian-Canadian mail contracts providing for a call at Fanning Island.
