( The*© was a good attendance at the i Town Hall throughout this morning, when three classes—piano concerto, soprano solo, and duet (tenor and bass) —were disposed of so far aa the preliminary stages were concerned. After lunph the first section of the solo pianist recital, for the R. and F. Piano Agency's prize of a £10n pjwno, was commenced, but the result had not been announced when the "Star" went to press. PIANO CONCERTO. Two performers. First Movement Allegro con Brio, Concerto C minor. Op. 37, BeetI hoven. Four entries were received in this seclion, tind the judge selected Misses .Edna Smceton and Muriel Frost (Mount Eden) and Misses Jessie Webster and Gladys Bigging (Auckland) to appear in the fnuil. }lc remarked that the section was an interesting one. some of the competitors giving creditable performances. The unsuccessful performers were Misses ■Jennie and Klla McDonald (Auckland) and Misses Daisy Evans and Nellie Renshaw (Devonport). SOPRANO SOLO, "O Hall of Song" ("Tannhauser." Wagner). Out of five originul entrants in this contest only one—Miss L. Gardner (New Lynn)—faced the judge. Mr Orchaxd said it -was a pity that the other ladies had .backed out. as the piece chosen was a line aria. The single competitor had given a fairly effective performance, and he had awarded her 82 points, though she did not appear to know exactly how to interpret the song, or at least failed to give him the impression that she did. DUET (Gentlemen), "Watchman. What of the Night?" (Sargent). Nine entries were received iv this section, and the judge selected the following to compete in the fimil: —Messrs W. Aspinall and 0. E. Farrow (Auckland), Chaa. Hunter and Thos. Homer (Mount Fuskill). and A. Ripley and JI. Orchard (Ponspnby). The judge said that he had not enjoyed the performances very much, some of tlie voices being very hard and harsh. Again, in several instances a good tenor was singing with an inferior bass, and vice versa- The following also sang:—Messrs J. .Smithson and F. Baker (Mount Roskill), F. Bourke and Frank Adeane (Pamell), Chas. ,Toll and another (Ohristchurch), J. Littler and OJ. M. Howe (Auckland), Roy Deilmv and 1-Jlwin Dennis (Mount Kden), A. A. Brook and J. Cox (Auckland).
