Two hours after the scow left Auckland the police learned that Wadsworth was on board. .Had they known a little earlier he -would have been detained as a deserter, and would probably be alive now. | An inquiry into the circiMnstances connected with the man's death wass held at the Coroner's Court this morning by Mr T. Gresham, before a jury of six. i Robert Carnaghan. mate of the scowj Era, stated in evidence, that when the I scow was off Brown 'a Island on June 20 during a squall Wads-worth was knocked . over by the fort-sheet. A boat that was ; towing astern was launched immediately | and one of the crew was over an hour i searching without success. Wadsworth I was perfectly sober. He had. been on board I all day. Witness identified the body by the I clothes. Wadsworth was about 27 years of age. He came from Melbourne in the Waimate, a cargo boat in the Home trade. Deceased was a single .man and said he had no relatives in New Zealand, his father and brother being in London. By a juror: As soon as Wad-worth went over a lifebuoy was thrown in with light attached. Sergeant A. E. Baud stated that the police had information that Samuel Wadsworth. who deserted from the Waimate, went away on the scow Era.
