ASSOCIATION MATCHES.

EVERTOIf WINS FREHEERSHIE. PONSOKBY COMES TO LIGHT. The last series of matches for the premiership shield did not alter the respective positions on the list which the competing teams have occupied for the past few Saturdays. Bverton in this last game had the only reverse, if a drawn game can b« called a reverse, which they have met ■with this season. The match with Ponsonby on the Domain was exciting right from the jump, and, had the ground been in good condition, it would have been really fast. Ponsanby rose -to the occasion with some of the old-time dash, and, considering tlieir good form, and Everton's bad luck In losing the services of Webster, the premiers came through the ordeal with distinct credit. Brotherhood held Carlton for three-quarters of a strenuous game, and then rattled in three goals in dashing style. At Devonport, Corinthians again secured a win from the Shore by the narrow margin of one goal. The following table shows the positions of the various teams at the end of the first grade championship: — Goals Goals Chp, P. W. 1.. D. for agst. Pts. Everton ... 10 a — 1 48 13 19 Corinthian 0 fi 2 1 25 17 13 Carlton ... 10 3 5 L- 14 26 8 Ponsonby .10 2 4 4 14 21 8 Brotherhood ii 3 « - 13 27 6 Shore 10 1. 7 2 14 24 4 EVEKTON V. PONSONBY. This game was played on the Domain, and as it turned out, It proved to be the hardest tussle that the conquering Everton team has had this season. When they met the first time this year, Everton defeated Ponsonby by three goals to one, but in this, the last match in the premiership competition, Ponsonby woke up to the imporiance of 'the occasion, and lined up with a team that gave a display well worthy ■of last season's premiership form. It was, perhaps, the first time this year that Ponsonby has taken the field with a full side, so that in a way their belated enthusiasm was a compliment to Everton. One conld not help regretting that the conditions for play were not more favourable. On a fast, dry ground the contest would have been eomethin-g to remember. As it was, the ground was sodden and sticky, and the ball heavy and slimy. Everton had to suffer the misfortune of war In that Baker was laid out for a while shortly after the start. Although by the timely use of embrocation, applied by vigorous and kindly hands. Baker was able again tn take his place on the field, the team suffered another misfortune through Webster's injured leg, which crippled him on the previous Saturday, giving wav under the strain and rompelling the doughty little left-winger to retire hors rle combat. With ten men they struggled along very bravely against the smartest and most skilful combination they have met this year. Poasonby made the pace hot from the begin- ; ning, and scored first goal from the boot of centre-forward Webster. Their second goal came from a penalty given for hands within the penalty area. Everton also had their share, of the attack, and two goals showed to their credit from keen active forward combination before the spell ended with honours even. In the second r.pell, Everton tried the one-back came for a while, Ridley taking the vacant place on the left of the forward line. Later, however, lie dropped bark into the fall-back division, and Everton made the best of the circumstances with four forwards. It was a hard spell, every loch of the struggle being keenly contested. The premiers got a lead from a clever goal by Boyne, who improved skilfully on a long pass given by Ridley In a free-kick. They retained their advantage in a hard-fought struggle right till wi'tiin a few minutes of time, when, from a corner, nicely placed by Culpln, Tatton popped In a pretty g'rtal for Ponsonby. The game ended amid great excitement: Bverton .._„.„. — _~..■ 3 Ponsonby .—■..... --_ 3 Mr Guest was referee. CORINTHIAN BEATS NORTH SHORE Oddly cn<rogh, the senior game at the Shore between the. local team and Corinthians ended with the same score as Hiat on the previous meeting of these two teams 3 to 2 In favour of Corinthians. The first spell -was not very interesting, and 'the only score was a goal to the town team. Daniels made a shot at goal and Samson, the Shore full-back, attempted to boot it back, but Instead Bent the leather fairly into the net. Stewart of the Shore team met -with a nasty fall that incapacitated him for the rest of lip aftenroon. Hp was making for the hnll when he slipped, falling on his stomach. A hefty Corinthhin man w-ho was following closely slipped and fell on top of Stewart, who had in he .arried off the field and did not play again. Matters livened up considerably in the second spell, and Rose was not long In adding another soal to Corinthians' credit. TabernaWe recorded Shore's first goal, which would not have 'been recorded ihad tJie white's "goalie" been ordinarily safe. Corinthians ■pressed hardly. Bennett, the Shore goalkeepeT. had plenty of work to do, and did it well. Shepherd scored again for CorinrJiiane. and Purdie, Who was playing a useful game all the afternoon, beat the wihrte goalkeeper, the game ending; Corinthians ... .„ „.—. S .North Shore ~...-..~~. .. ■. -, 2 BROTHERHOOD V. CARLTON. This frame was played at the Domain, and proved to be a most interesting game between two closely-matcheß teams. The ground was heavy and m-nddy, and this detracted from the skill though not from the interest of the contest. The first spell fnded without score, and up till within a quarter of an hour of the whistle for time neither side had a bead hi front. The Brotherhood men wore Carlton down, however, and scored three goals in fairly quick succession, Oram. F. Pearson, and A. Pearson bring the players to put the finishing touches on to the attacking rushes. The game ended in a well-deserved win for a keen team: ■- Brotherhood „ _.—.„. r. More than usual interest attached to this game, because Hotspur were at the head of the second division, with St. John's two points behind. This, game therefore puts Hotspur four clear points ahead. Kverton beat North Shore by six puls to nil, Baker (3), Churchill (2) and Smith being the scorers. THIRD DIVISION. CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY Y.M.C-A.
