MOTOR LAUNCH PASSENGERS.
UNLICENSED OWNER FINED. (By Telegraph.—Assosiatioii.) DUNEDIN, Friday. The stipendiary magistrate (Mr. Wlds dowson) gave judgment to-day in, a case in which th« owner of a motor launch of less than 40ft was charged with carrying passengers within river limits, and with plying within river limits on the Otago Harbour without carrying life-saving appliances, as provided by the Shipping and Seamen Act. The launfli was not licensed to carry passengers, bat there was I no evidence that, the persons mentioned iv the charge were, carried for hire. The magistrate said that tie main question was as to the meaning of the word "plying." and upheld the contention of the counsel for the prosecution that "plying" used in the rules under the Act must be read in a funeral sense, and that it mattered! not that the launch made only one trip The defendant was convicted, but as this was a test case, no penalty was inflicted, defendant being ordered to paj; costs only.
