There was an interesting gathering of engineers this afternoon at the rooms of the Australasian -Institute of Marine Engineer?, to witness the presentation-of an address and a purse of sovereigns to Mr. 11. Wetherilt updn his retirement from the position of Chief Inspector of Machinery. Mr. .lames Mclntyre, in a neat speech, made the presentation, dwelling on the ninny good qualities of the recipient, and his eminent litness for the position he had occupied. The address, which is a cleverly executed bit of the illuminator's art, reads as follows:—"We, the members of the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers, Auckland district, desire to express to you our sense of the great services you have .rendered us during the many years you have discharged the duties of Chief Inspector of Machinery for the province of Auckland. We sincerely regret that, the exigencies of the senile necessitate your retirement from the position you have so eminently rilled, not only with credit to your department, but with the greatest satisfaction to all those who have had business dealings with you. \Vo now beg your acceptance of this address and purse of sovereigns as a slight token of the esteem and rc-pect in which you aire held by the members of our fraternity. In bidding you good-bye as Chief Inspector of Machinery for this district we feel your continued residence amongst us will enable you to find scope for doing good work not only in the engineering profession, hut. also amongst all who may require expert advice and assistance which we art' confident will be as readily given us in the past.*' The address was signed by Messrs.
