Thero was a large attendance β-t Messrs. Samuel Vaile and Sons' sale rooms to-day, when a four-roomed cottage at Avondale, on 33 perches, near the railway station, was sold for £375, and a six-roomed house on the corner of Gladstone Road and Stratford Street, Parnell, realised £800. Prince of Wales' Birthday is one of the statutory holidays provided for in the award under which the General Drivers and Carters' Union of Kmployees work. There is, however, a proviso that in the event of the day being deemed inconvenient, the employers may substitute another for it. As Monday was considered to be inconvenient, the employers intimated to the union their desire to substitute another day, but the date mentioned, being several months ahead, the employers objected to the change. A conference was held this morning, •when the reasons for the men's objections were set before -the employers, who 'finally agreed to adhere to the statutory holMay on Monday. The catch of mutton birds is now said to have been several thousand birds of that of last year.
